Celebrating Motherhood Through Style
There is something truly magical about maternity photos. They honor the transformation, the anticipation, and the strength of the journey that is motherhood.
And while the thought of posing for photos may feel exciting (and a little intimidating!), choosing the right outfit doesn’t have to add stress. As a lifestyle photographer in Orange County, I’ve styled dozens of glowing mamas and this is your go-to style guide to make you feel confident and radiant during your maternity session.
Following the Formula
To make choosing your maternity shoot outfit stress-free, I use a straightforward three-step styling guide. It’s the same process I share with all my OC clients, and it ensures every detail—from colors to mood—comes together beautifully.
Step One: Pick Your Vibe
This is where your personality shines. Are you feeling romantic, trendy, whimsical, or western-inspired?
I recommend two different looks for maternity sessions:
- One casual outfit. A pair of wide-leg jeans, a sports bra, and a crisp white button-up shirt left open is a favorite for a modern, relaxed look.
- One formal & romantic outfit. Think flowy dress, lace gown, or an elegant maxi.
Step Two: Pick Your Location
Think of your photos as a full composition. Your location sets the tone for your wardrobe. Are we shooting at the beach, a rustic park, or a dreamy garden? Each setting inspires a slightly different style.
- Beachy backdrops (Crystal Cove, Huntington Beach) call for light fabrics and airy tones.
- Nature-filled spots (Irvine Regional Park, Fullerton Arboretum) pair beautifully with earthy colors.
- Studio or home sessions allow more freedom for garments like formal gowns, cozy casuals, or even a little mix of both.
Step Three: Pick Your Color Palette
Once we know the location, choosing a color palette is easy. The three palettes that photograph best with my shooting and editing style are:
Neutrals: Ivory, cream, beige, white
Earth Tones: Olive, terracotta, camel, rust
Pastels: Blush, dusty blue, soft peach, sage
These colors complement Orange County’s natural scenery and keep the focus on you.
Choose Soft, Flowing Fabrics
When it comes to maternity photo outfit ideas, comfort and elegance are the perfect combo. Flowing, breathable fabrics like chiffon, tulle, and soft cotton not only flatter your changing body but also move beautifully in the OC breeze, especially if we’re shooting outdoors.
Colors that look stunning in natural light:
- Ivory
- Blush
- Sage
- Dusty blue
- Mauve
- Soft peach
These hues keep the focus on your face and baby bump while blending seamlessly with Southern California's soft skies and sandy tones.
Keep It Simple, But Stunning
Skip the loud prints, logos, and overly trendy pieces. These can distract from the natural emotion and beauty we’re trying to capture. Instead, opt for:
- Solid colors
- Subtle lace or eyelet detailing
- Soft floral prints (avoid larger prints)
- Off-the-shoulder or empire-waist dresses to highlight your silhouette
The simpler your outfit, the more your expression and story shine.
Coordinating With the Family
If your partner or kids are joining the session, you don’t need to match but coordination does matter. Aim for a shared color palette with slight variation.
For example:
- You wear blush and ivory
- Partner wears beige chinos and a white linen shirt
- Toddler in a soft floral dress or tan overalls
Neutral tones and pastels always photograph well and keep the focus on the love between you all.
Don't Forget the Accessories!
The right accessories can add elegance or a hint of personality to your look. Consider bringing:
- A wide-brimmed hat for sun-drenched shoots
- A sheer shawl or kimono for layering
- Fresh flower crown for a soft, romantic vibe
- Delicate jewelry like small hoops or a locket
Just remember—less is more. Choose one statement accessory and let it shine.
What to Bring to Your Maternity Shoot
Maternity shoots are a little adventure so come prepared! Here's what I recommend:
- Water & a light snack (especially in warmer weather)
- Touch-up bag: brush, lip balm, face blotters
- Flat sandals or backup shoes for walking
- Neutral blanket or towel (for sitting poses)
- Safety pins or clips for quick fixes
You’ll feel more relaxed knowing you have everything you need close by.
Common Wardrobe Mistakes to Avoid
It’s easy to accidentally choose something that doesn’t work well on camera. Here are a few quick no-gos:
- Tight or clingy fabrics (they emphasize what you don’t want)
- Neon or overly bright colors
- Heavy patterns or busy prints
- Loud jewelry that catches light or sound
- Stiff or uncomfortable shoes. Go barefoot if needed!
I always advise doing a test try-on and walk-through at home the day before your session.
